What if losing your sense of security is actually the first step toward discovering your true purpose? Life can change in an instant—and for me, it did.
Shortly after turning 50, I was already navigating a series of profound personal changes. Then, just as I began to reimagine what the next chapter could look like, my role at a global software company was eliminated in a reorganization. My foundation was already cracked, and suddenly even my safety net was gone. The mix of shock, fear, and loss could have consumed me. But instead of breaking, I felt a nudge: What if this was the moment to push my limits? I realized I could either view this as a devastating setback or as a springboard. After nearly two decades in corporate life, maybe this was my chance to build something that aligned with who I really am.
So, I took the leap—and bet on myself.
I left behind the steady paycheck and structure of corporate life to launch my own business: a consulting practice and passion project centered on strategic storytelling, amplifying the voices of women and gender-diverse leaders whose courage and authenticity inspire change. It terrified me. Starting from scratch made me feel vulnerable, and my doubts followed me everywhere:
– Am I ready to lead instead of being behind the scenes?
– Can I be visible in this way?
– Do I have what it takes to make this work?
There were moments when the fear was so strong I wanted to turn back. But here’s what I’ve learned: fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you’re growing. With every story I helped bring to life and every connection I made, my confidence grew. What began as a passion project reconnected me to my purpose and sparked a fire I didn’t realize had been waiting inside me.
The biggest difference between my life then and now? Alignment. Ownership. Fulfillment. In my corporate life, I worked within someone else’s vision, structure, and priorities. Today, I shape my own. My days are more demanding, but they’re also more meaningful. Sometimes the most profound growth doesn’t come from finding certainty, but from moving forward despite uncertainty.
It’s about embracing discomfort, choosing to leap, and trusting that the ground will rise up to meet you.
