Are you replaceable, or do you have something unique? I went to see the bands Journey, Steve Miller Band, and Def Leppard. It was fun going down memory lane and singing along with some of my favorite songs from my youth.
During the concert, I was thinking about Steve Perry of Journey. He was the lead singer of the band for 21 years, but after some conflict and health issues, he left the band in 1998. At the time, Steve might have thought Journey would stop performing. But nine years later, the band discovered Arnel Pineda, who joined Journey and is their current singer. If you close your eyes and listen to Arnel, you might think it's Steve Perry. Often, Arnel sounds more like Steve Perry than Steve himself. There is a fantastic documentary, “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey,” about how Arnel was discovered. It is truly an inspiring story.
Then you look at the band Def Leppard. Eight years after Def Leppard started, drummer Rick Allen was in a horrible car accident in 1984 that left him with one arm. Three months after the accident, Rick started playing drums again and has been performing ever since. He has a custom drum set and sounds as good as ever!
In one band, the lead singer was replaceable. In the other band, they found a way to accommodate the drummer so he could remain a vital part of the band. In life, find your band that will accommodate you, find you valuable, and appreciate you. Find a way to be unique and not replaceable. #herstories #unique #thriving #survival
