The importance of character

My youngest child, Alexander, graduated from high school in May 2024, eliciting a whirlwind of emotions—joy, pride, and a hint of nostalgia. Attending a small high school meant each student received a personalized speech from the Head of School. Here's an excerpt of what was said about Alexander:

·     Overwhelming kindness and thoughtfulness. It never waivers.

·     You remain a beacon of calm and compassion.

·     You always ensure no one is left out and everything is fair and equitable.

·     The first person to say, "Thank you”.

·     You exhibit warmth and gratitude that is often missing in today’s world.

·     Take care of yourself like I know you take care of others.

·     Constantly pouring into others will sometimes leave you empty.

·     Start to recognize when you start to feel empty, so you know when to pour into yourself.

As my father always said, 'Character is the most important trait a person can possess.' In American culture, there's often an emphasis on academic achievement, sports success, and striving for the top spot. In between all these pursuits, we sometimes overlook the fundamental importance of character.

My son embodies kindness, integrity, and compassion. He maintains excellent grades, serves as student council president, works during school, and supports his family through life's challenges. After being accepted into six universities, he has chosen to take a gap year and defer admission before starting college in the fall of 2025. His decision exemplifies a thoughtful approach to his future. I couldn't be prouder as I watch his life’s journey unfold and see the vast array of opportunities that lie ahead for him.

2025 ... a whole new start

2024 was not the year for me. I have often said, 'This will be my year,' and those words would mean absolutely nothing. I broke my ankle...
